Monastic complex
UNESCO World Heritage
The Cilento region is rich in precious, ancient jewels. Today, we’re presenting a fascinating monastic complex. Check it out!
Palinuro is absolutely stunning, but its surroundings are at least as beautiful as the town itself. So many parks, temples, villages, and grottos (like the “Grotta Azzurra” in Palinuro) are just waiting to be discovered. A place that we particularly love is the Charterhouse of San Lorenzo in Padula: one of Italy’s oldest and largest Carthusian monasteries. The complex was built in 1306 by Tommaso Sanseverino and, over the years, many important figures came to visit the charterhouse on pilgrimages, like the Roman Emperor Charles V. The building is divided into two main spaces – one dedicated to contemplation and one to work – and it also features the largest cloister in the world (12,000m2)! The monastery was closed in 1807 and was used as an internment camp during both World Wars.
When staying at our Hotel San Pietro, you can reach this majestic UNESCO World Heritage in a one-hour drive. Don’t miss this jewel!
